Don't know if you've ever heard of Isaac Bonewits, but his most profound work involved cult dynamics and the warning signs (his 'Cult Danger Evaluation Frame' is a brilliant analytical tool). If his work had been applied to Stuart and the rest of the Oath Keepers/militia groups, they'd have fit his risk-parameters exactly.
Thanks for the recommendation, I feel like that's going to be really relevant work in the near future. My personal uninformed take is that we're heading into another era of cults preying on national dissolution and disillusionment like the heyday of 1970s, and that this weird fusion of right wing culture war with irony-poisoning fascist messaging and legit mystery cult religion we see in the Q churches and that semi-Moonie AR-15 compound thing is probably going to get a lot worse.
